Sohu IT, 1/14/14
Following the release of the "Weixin Wo" SIM card by Chinese internet firm Tencent (0700.HK) and China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) in Guangdong in August 2013, which offered Guangzhou Unicom subscribers discounted mobile data for exclusive use on Tencent's WeChat (Weixin) mobile instant messaging app, the two companies have launched Weixin Wo SIM cards in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shaanxi provinces. Jiangsu and Zhejiang Unicom customers can pre-order the Weixin Wo card on Tencent's B2C e-commerce website 51Buy, with shipments beginning on January 15. Shaanxi Unicom customers can purchase the card either in one of China Unicom's local service centers or on the Shaanxi Unicom online store.
As of January 2, 2014, approximately 1.64 mln Weixin Wo cards had been sold in Guangdong, with roughly 8,000 additional SIM cards being issued in the province each day.
Users of the Weixin Wo card have access to several bonus WeChat features in addition to WeChat-exclusive mobile data, including increased maximum group chat membership, custom emoticons, exclusive deals on WeChat games, mobile payment discounts, and the ability to upload high-res photos.
