Alibaba Accuses Tencent's WeChat of IPR Infringement
PC Online, 12/12/13
Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group's mobile instant messaging service, Laiwang, recently released a long statement on its official Sina Weibo microblog accusing the newly launched "Weishequ" ("WeCommunity") public accounts forum feature on Tencent's (0700.HK) WeChat (Weixin) mobile messaging application of copying Laiwang's "Zhadui" interest and topic-based groups feature. Tencent has not yet responded to the accusation.
On December 10, the development team from Tencent's internet community solutions provider subsidiary, Comsenz, released its WeCommunity mobile SNS product, which is imbedded in WeChat's public accounts platform. WeChat public account operators that bind their accounts to the service can immediately open a mobile community forum using their own account name. Subscribers of public accounts can then enter a forum through a menu link or by entering "SNS" in a dialogue box after authorizing WeCommunity to access their account information. All users in the forum can post comments.
WeChat's WeCommunity currently supports text input, but does not allow users to post images.
