China Unicom's (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) Qingdao subsidiary has partnered with Chinese telecom equipment and terminal manufacturer Huawei to begin internet TV business trials. China Unicom's over the top (OTT) service platform construction is being overseen by Huawei, and will utilize Huawei's DN363 set-top box (STB) terminal equipment. Huawei's STB is compatible with IPTV and OTT systems, and can connect to China Unicom's current IPTV platform or the new OTT platform, according to user preference. The STB supports HD programming, and offers Wi-Fi, motion sensing remote control, 3D video, DLNA interactive apps, and video calling.
Qingdao Unicom GM Yang Qingyou has stated that the new internet TV service is geared toward local users in Qingdao, and that China Unicom is cooperating with Chinese consumer electronics manufacturers Haier, Hisense (600060.SH), and China's State Administration of Press and Publication, Radio, Film and Television (SAPPRFT) to develop programming suited to local markets. According to Yang, internet TV service from Qingdao Unicom is expected to be launched in the first quarter of next year.
