Rumor: China Telecom, Unicom Receive FDD-LTE Spectrum Allocations
Tencent Tech, 10/12/13
According to an industry insider, China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) and China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) have been allocated 4G FDD-LTE network spectrum by China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). China Unicom has been allocated the 2.1 GHz frequency band (1955-1980 MHz/ 2145-2170 MHz), and China Telecom has been allocated the 1.8 GHz frequency band (1755-1785 MHz/ 1850-1880 MHz) to operate their respective FDD-LTE networks. Prior to this, the MIIT has announced that the entire 190 MHz frequency range of the 2.6 GHz frequency band will be used for TD-LTE network operation. China Mobile's (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) 4G trial network has been rolled out based on this standard.
A higher frequency band shortens carrier wave transmission effectiveness. Compared to China Telecom's 1.8 GHz and China Unicom's 2.1 GHz bands, the higher 2.6 GHz TD-LTE band necessitates a shorter distance between network base stations, resulting in the construction of comparably more base stations.
