Rumor: Tencent to Begin WeChat Public Account Monetization

Sohu IT, 10/11/13

A source close to Chinese internet and mobile services firm Tencent (0700.HK) has revealed that the company will initiate monetization of the Public Accounts platform of its WeChat (Weixin) mobile messaging application beginning in October. According to the source, Service Accounts on the platform will be charged an annual fee of RMB 3,000, and will be granted access to a variety of API ports. A WeChat spokesperson has dismissed the rumors as mere industry speculation.

In August, v5.0 of WeChat divided Public Accounts into Reader Subscription Accounts and Service Accounts. Service Accounts may send chat messages to users through push notifications, but are permitted only one message per month.
