WeChat Debuts Paid Public Account Services
Tecent Tech, 9/13/13
Chinese entertainer Chen Kun has announced the release of premium membership services for subscribers to Chen's public account on Tencent's (0700.HK) WeChat (Weixin) mobile messaging application. Through WeChat, users can now purchase VIP memberships that grant access to premium content from Chen, such as membership forums, written works by Chen, and access to Chen's music. Membership fees range from RMB 18, RMB 50, RMB 100, and RMB 168 for a monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, and annual membership, respectively.
According to WeChat, celebrity membership services are still in beta testing, with the model to be extended beyond celebrities to other enterprises in the future. At present, WeChat does not take in any revenue from premium membership trials, allowing all revenue to accrue to account operators. In order to activate payment services for WeChat premium accounts, public account operation must be handed over to a third-party company. Chen's WeChat account is operated by Shenzhen-based mobile app developer and WeChat public account operator Shenzhen Bite Hai Information Technology.
