Beijing Begins Implementation of Real-Name Network Access Registration
Beijing Daily, 8/27/13
The Beijing subsidiaries of China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK), China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH), and China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) have jointly announced that, starting September 1, the companies' self-operated service halls, online service halls, and licensed third-party service locations will begin implementation of real-name registration for new fixed-line, mobile, and internet data card users, as well as users wishing to apply for transfer of service.
Currently, Beijing Unicom has already begun implementation of the real-name registration policy for its new users, while Beijing Mobile and Beijing Telecom still offer SIM cards without mandatory real-name registration. Upon implementation, the real-name registration policy may extend to existing users, restricting access to services such as wireless data package changes and lost SIM card notification unless their information is updated.
In July, China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) issued real-name network access regulations, effective September 1, for communications network users.
