Alibaba's 1688.com Launches Group Buy Channel

Chinese B2B e-commerce firm Alibaba.com's small enterprise e-commerce platform 1688.com launched a new wholesale group buy channel, "Huopin," today. Huopin allows buyers to pool their procurement demand for wholesale products in order to realize price advantages by "teaming up," an activity suggested by the product's Chinese name. A visit to the Huopin front page (http://huopin.1688.com) at 10 AM this morning revealed an initial group of 20 products on sale at discounts ranging from 10% to 60% off. Merchants will be required to ship all orders within 72 hours, and to abide by Huopin's "pre-emptive compensation" policy.
A Huopin spokesperson said that the product aims to offer small and medium-sized wholesalers — particularly starred Taobao sellers — a low-cost sourcing option for products. Huopin offerings will include apparel and accessories, small goods, home furnishings and foods, 3C goods and home appliances, raw materials, industrial goods, and textiles and packaging.
