Taiwan Investigates Taobao for Tax Evasion

Ebrun, 4/23/13

Taiwanese broadcaster TVBS reported on April 22 that Taiwanese customers purchase more than 10,000 products per day from Hangzhou-based C2C & B2C e-commerce site Taobao, generating NTD 46 bln in transactions in 2012 alone, up more than 65% from 2011. Under Taiwanese regulations, items costing NTD 3,000 or less are exempt from taxes and customs duties, meaning that Taobao has not generated any revenue for the Taiwanese government. Some lawmakers allege that Taobao could be underreporting the value of items shipped in order to evade taxes. The Taiwanese Ministry of Finance and other agencies are investigating the allegations.
