Alibaba Announces New Handsets, Rebranded OS

Chinese e-commerce conglomerate Alibaba Group has announced that the company has changed the Chinese name of its Aliyun OS mobile operating system from "Aliyun OS" to "Ali Mobile OS" (unofficial translation). Alibaba also announced the release of six new Ali Mobile OS handsets from five different domestic manufacturers. The company plans to use an open platform model to create an Ali Mobile OS ecosystem for partner terminal manufacturers, operators, hardware designers, and developers.
Alibaba has detailed 4 elements of its new Ali Mobile OS ecosystem:
1. Taobao cloud handset distribution platform - Alibaba will use subsidiary C2C & B2C e-commerce site Taobao as a channel for Ali Mobile OS handset sales.
2. Alibaba wireless collaboration - Alibaba will invest RMB 1 bln to help Ali Mobile OS developers and establish a revenue sharing system.
3. "Zero down" handsets to qualifying customers - Alibaba, in cooperation with handset manufacturers, and telecom operators, will offer RMB 0 Ali Mobile OS handset promotions to Taobao users who have established sufficiently high credit ratings in Taobao's credit rating system.
4. Handset partnerships - Alibaba will partner with handset manufacturers Zopo, Amoi Technology, G'Five, Konka, and 139shop.com (which sells handsets under the " Little Pepper" brand) to release 6 Ali Mobile OS handsets.
