Beijing Unicom Tracks Customer "WeChat" Mobile Data Use

BiaNews, 3/25/13

A number of China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) customers in Beijing have noted that, beginning in February 2013, Beijing Unicom started to track mobile data usage for mobile messaging apps such as Tencent's (0700.HK) WeChat (Weixin) and Mobile QQ, Renren's (NYSE: RENN) Mobile Desktop Client, and Xiaomi's MiTalk. When Beijing Unicom users log onto the company's online site to check their mobile data usage, mobile data charges will be displayed either as an unmarked "mobile data charge" or marked as a "WeChat" or other mobile IM charge. The company does not break out data usage for any other applications.

The Beijing branches of China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) and China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) and other branches of China Unicom do not currently offer similar break-outs of mobile data usage by-application.
