Tencent to Fully Open Cloud Service

36Kr, 1/10/13

Tencent (0700.HK) senior vice president Dowson Tong said today that the Shenzhen-based internet company will open its Tencent Cloud (unofficial translation) service to the public early this year. Tencent's cloud services will be open even to developers not making use of the company's Tencent Open Platform.

Tang confirmed that Tencent Cloud's services will be similar to Amazon's AWS (Amazon Web Services) IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) offerings. There will be API call differences, however, and Tencent Cloud server operating systems will be limited to a choice of Linux distributions. Tang said that Amazon's AWS is too expensive for Chinese developers, implying that Tencent's offering will be cheaper.

A source inside Tencent revealed that Tencent Cloud services will chiefly comprise cloud servers, cloud databases, elastic web services, and high-throughput NoSQL services.

Tang said that Tencent already has 20,000 physical servers powering Tencent Cloud.
