Foxconn to Manufacture Smartphone for Meizu
Tencent Tech, 12/20/12
Mo Cuitian, VP of Zhuhai-based handset manufacturer Meizu Technology, recently disclosed that since consumer demand for Meizu's MX2 smartphone has exceeded the company's own production capacity, Meizu has partnered with Taiwanese electronics manufacturer Foxconn (2038.HK; 2354.TW), which will begin manufacturing the handset in January 2013. In the past Meizu has produced all of its handsets, and the MX2 marks the first time Meizu has outsourced production.
Meizu currently has 402 retail locations in mainland China (as well as one in Hong Kong), handling 95% of Meizu's handset sales. Meizu aims to increase the number of stores to 500 in 2013, according to Mo, as well as increase the proportion of total sales via online channels to 15%.
Meizu launched the MX2 in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Russia on December 19, selling the handset through operators in the latter two regions; Meizu still has no operator sales channels in mainland China. "We're in the process of searching for a suitable partner," said Mo.
