Rumor: China Mobile to Dive into E-Commerce
Sohu IT, 12/10/12
An industry source revealed today that China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) plans to enter the e-commerce field, and will begin a new first-phase tender for online mall applications software and systems integration in the near future. The tender will reportedly be divided between the categories of sales subsystems and services subsystems: the former will include a product sales platform, an open platform, and payment and logistics gateways, and the latter will include a self-service platform and unified API port platform.
China Mobile has reportedly begun trial operations for major regional logistics centers. At the present stage, the operator's centers provide coverage to 116 cities across 12 provinces in five major regions of the country. After the logistics centers are capable of satisfying China Mobile's own internal logistics demands, they may be expanded to serve public logistics demands as well.
Editor's Note: China Mobile has already built five major regional warehouses for the North China, Southwest China, Northwest China, East China, and South China regions. The North China warehouse is located in Tianjin and serves Beijing, Hebei, and Shanxi; the Southwest China warehouse is located in Chongqing and serves Sichuan, Yunnan, and Guizhou; the Northwest China warehouse is located in Xi'an, Shaanxi province, and serves Ningxia; the East China warehouse is located in Nanjing, Jiangsu province, and serves Zhejiang, Anhui, and Shanghai; the South China warehouse is located in Foshan, Guangdong province, and serves Hunan and Hainan.
