Beijing Unicom Requires 3G Bundling with All 2M+ Broadband Plans
Economic Information Daily, 10/09/12
On September 1, China Unicom's (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) Beijing subsidiary began requiring that all 2M and higher home broadband packages sold by the company come bundled with a 3G contract. China Unicom's 2M home broadband service costs RMB 168 per month, the company's cheapest bundled 3G contract starts at RMB 66 per month, and it is possible to receive up to RMB 50 per month in subsidies for bundled 3G services.
According to a China Unicom representative, the bundled 3G phone requirement will continue until the end of the year. The company has yet to decide whether or not it will extend the bundled service requirement into 2013.
China Unicom has received numerous complaints from customers about the program. The company's Beijing subsidiary has recently unveiled another sales promotion entitled, "3G household, free broadband." Any family with three or more 3G subscriptions and RMB 200 in contract expenditures a month can receive free home broadband access from China Unicom.
