MIIT Signals Approval for TD-LTE Development

Ennweekly, 8/20/12

During an inspection of China Mobile's (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) TD-LTE trial network efforts in Hangzhou, Miao Wei, head of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), said that TD-LTE network expansion was an important driver of domestic consumption, and that further steps must be taken to improve policy and increase TD-LTE development. An industry insider said that Miao's comments imply that China Mobile's plans for a smooth evolution from 3G to 4G have been approved by relevant government authorities. Previously, due to concerns that TD-LTE might interfere with the development of China's indigeneous TD-SCDMA 3G standard, MIIT emphasized expansion of China Mobile's TD-SCDMA infrastructure in coordination with development of TD-LTE, and that China Mobile may receive a 4G operating license within 2-3 years.
