Rumor: Netease to Launch Smartphone

An industry source revealed recently that Chinese internet company Netease (Nasdaq: NTES) intends to follow in the footsteps of internet firm Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU), online media and game operator Shanda Interactive, and online security software developer Qihoo 360 (NYSE: QIHU) by introducing its own smartphone. Netease has reportedly partnered with a major handset maker, and will release a high-end, sub-RMB 1,000 smartphone in the near future. When contacted, the company declined to comment.

According to the source, the Netease smartphone will feature a 4.3" screen and a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor. A prototype has reportedly been completed, but no timetable has yet been set for a launch.

Netease already offers a number of mobile applications, including Netease News and Netease Reader.
