Sina Microblog to Launch Paid Service

Chinese internet company Sina (Nasdaq: SINA) has announced that it will soon introduce a premium membership service for its Sina Weibo microblogging platform, available for individual payments of RMB 5 per month or annually for RMB 50. The premium service will grant subscribers a membership badge featured on their Sina Weibo profile, the option to set up an SMS notification function for posts from up to 5 separate Weibo accounts, and an allocation of 300 SMS notifications each month (e.g. notification of new private messages or public posts).

Editor's Note: Sina's announcement of the new premium membership plan has stimulated a flood of related comments from Chinese internet users, with many users expressing skepticism over how many Weibo users would actually be interested to subscribe to the new service.
