Tencent: Qihoo 360 Disrupts Tencent App
DoNews, 1/06/12
Tencent (0700.HK) has released an announcement stating that Chinese online security software developer Qihoo 360 (NYSE: QIHU)'s 360 Safe security suite deliberately obstructs the normal operation of Tencent's QQ Computer Manager anti-virus application. According to Tencent, after communicating this information, it has not received an effective response. Tencent recommended that users who have installed several similar types of anti-virus and security software choose only one. Tencent revealed that recently a large volume of user feedback has indicated that when running both 360 Safe and QQ Computer Manager at the same time, users find that many programs run slowly, with plug-in scanners, system optimization programs, Trojan scanners and other programs particularly affected. After investigating the cause, Tencent found that the problem was originating in a driver related to 360 Safe that automatically loads when a computer starts up. According to Tencent, the driver seems to affect only QQ Computer Manager.
Editor's Note: Tencent and Qihoo 360 previously exchanged accusations of unfair competitive practices in November 2010, which led to the involvement of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) in the dispute and a successful lawsuit by Tencent.
