China Telcos Announce May 2011 Subscriber Totals

China's three main telecom operators have announced their subscriber totals for May 2011.
May saw the net addition of 9.94 mln new mobile subscribers. China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) added 5.02 mln new mobile subscribers, pushing the operator's total mobile user base to 611.17 mln, of which a total of 32 mln subscribers used China Mobile's TD-SCDMA terminals during the month. China Mobile added 2.62 mln new TD-SCDMA subscribers in May.
China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) added 0.59 mln new GSM subscribers, bringing its total GSM user base to 157.25 mln, and added 1.74 mln subscribers to its WCDMA 3G network, for a total of 22.09 mln WCDMA subscribers.
China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) added 2.60 mln CDMA subs, taking its total to 105.70 mln, of which 19.67 mln were CDMA2000 EV-DO subscribers. China Telecom added 1.83 mln new CDMA2000 EV-DO subscribers in May.
Of the combined total of 73.76 mln 3G subs, China Mobile holds 43%, China Unicom 30%, and China Telecom 27%. Of total new mobile subs added in May, China Mobile took 50.48%, dropping its share of China's total mobile user base to 68.20%. China Unicom's share of the total mobile user base rose slightly to 20.01%, while China Telecom's share increased for the 29th straight month, rising from 11.63% at the end of April to 11.79% at the end of May.
China Telecom lost 480,000 fixed-line subs, reducing its total to 172.47 mln, and China Unicom lost 304,000 fixed-line subs, dropping its total to 95.85 mln.
China Telecom added 1.04 mln new broadband subscribers to reach 68.86 mln, and China Unicom added 834,000 new broadband subs to reach 51.26 mln.
