Hanvon Wins Copyright Lawsuit

The No.1 Intermediate People's Court in Beijing recently issued its final decision in the Chung Hwa Book Company's copyright infringement suit against Chinese e-reader and handwriting input peripherals manufacturer Hanvon (002362.SZ). The court ruled in Hanvon's favor, finding insufficient basis for Chung Hwa's charges; the victory will increase Hanvon's profits for Q2 of this year by RMB 4.47 mln.
Chung Hwa sued Hanvon for more than RMB 4 mln in damages in the Haidian District People's Court in late October 2009, alleging that Hanvon had bundled titles to which Chung Hwa holds authorship rights with four of its e-readers. On December 20, 2010, the court ruled in Hanvon's favor after appeal and a review of the case.
After Chung Hwa brought its suit, Hanvon said that it indicated projected liabilities of RMB 4.47 mln in its 2009 financial report, in keeping with the damages sought by the publisher. Hanvon's victory in the case means that it will now claim the damages as profit.
