Tencent Sued by QQ Users

South Daily, 8/30/08

Chen Jun, editor-in-chief of the Guangdong Public Interest Litigation website, claims his site has launched a lawsuit against Chinese instant messaging (IM) developer Tencent (0700.HK) on behalf of 11 users of Tencent's QQ IM program whose account numbers were stolen. The users are suing to have their accounts reinstated and the case has been accepted by the Shenzhen Nanshan District People's Court with proceedings to begin on November 4.

In April this year, the users discovered they could not log in to their QQ accounts, and contacted Tencent to complain that their accounts had been stolen. The company would not reinstate the accounts despite the owners having sufficient documentation to prove account ownership. Currently, there is no well-defined standard to determine what is needed in order to have a stolen account reinstated, with the matter at the complete discretion of Tencent.
