MIIT to Issue New IDC, ISP Licenses
Shanghai Securities News, 5/16/13
At the Broadband Communications and M2M Summit 2013 held May 15 in Beijing, Liu Duo, deputy director of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology's (MIIT) China Academy of Telecommunication Research (CATR), revealed that the MIIT will begin issuing new internet data center (IDC) and internet service provider (ISP) licenses in the near future.
The MIIT has received more than 60 license applications since announcing in November 2012 that it would encourage qualifying enterprises to begin applying for IDC and ISP licenses as of December 1. Chinese telecom equipment and terminal manufacturer Huawei and Alibaba Group subsidiary AliCloud have already passed MIIT review, with more companies forthcoming.
The MIIT stopped issuing IDC licenses in 2008, and stopped issuing new ISP licenses in late 2009.
