Rumor: China Mobile WLAN Equipment Bid Results Leaked
Sohu IT, 11/30/12
An industry source revealed today that results for China Mobile's (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) 2012 WLAN tender will be released the first week of December. The tender covers roughly 1.5 mln (mainly 802.11n) access points (AP), 200,000 more than original estimates.
Fujian-based telecom equipment manufacturer Fujian Star-net Communications (002396.SZ), IP technology and solutions provider H3C Technologies, wireless networking equipment maker Honghao Mingchuan Technology, and Beijing-based Autelan Technology are reportedly among the winners, while traditional WLAN equipment makers Cisco and Motorola were not listed among the companies winning bids. Results were reportedly disappointing for Huawei and ZTE (0763.HK; 000063.SZ) as well.
China Mobile currently has nearly 3 mln WLAN APs nationwide. Over the next three years, the operator will set up more than 6 mln new APs in order to meet its goal of "developing 10 major application categories, expanding to more than 100 major cities, and developing more than 10 mln actual subscribers." China Mobile opened WLAN access earlier in 2012.
