China Mobile to Drive NFC SIM Card Adoption
Sohu IT, 11/27/12
At China Mobile's (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) upcoming December 5 global developer meeting, the operator will announce that it will launch NFC-enabled SIM cards, and will work with major banks and enterprises to promote the cards through an open multi-application platform.
The open multi-application platform, a core platform for the development of mobile wallet services, will be operated by China Mobile's e-commerce base network-wide. Banks and enterprises will be able to deploy their own applications on the platform, and users will be able to download software client applications from the platform to install on their mobile phones and as SIM applications. The platform will allocate an independent card space for each application, and will offer controls to ensure application security.
China Mobile will unveil its NFC-based mobile wallet service at the developer meeting. The operator's mobile wallet service will load subscribers' electronic card applications (including bank cards, public transit passes, campus- or company-access cards, and membership cards) onto NFC-enabled SIM cards and provide a secure space for users to browse, download, use, and uninstall applications. Users with NFC-enabled handsets will be able to use the cards simply by passing their phones over NFC terminals.
China Mobile has already formed partnerships with banks including China Merchants Bank, China Construction Bank, Shanghai Pudong Development Bank, and banking network China UnionPay for card applications. Third-party application partners for the platform can be divided roughly into the categories of banking and financial services, public transit, and company- or school-issued card services.
