Huawei Spends USD 800K on US Lobbying in H1 2012

According the the US Senate, Chinese telecom equipment and terminal manufacturer Huawei spent USD 820,000 on lobbying in the US in H1 2012, compared to USD 200,000 in 2011. Chinese telecom equipment and terminal manufacturer ZTE (0763.HK; 000063.SZ) has spent USD 80,000 on lobbying in the US in H1 2012, down from USD 100,000 in H1 2011.
Since October of last year, Huawei has hired six firms to represent the company in Washington D.C., including a former senator, two experienced Republican campaign aides, and a former Democratic chief of staff. This March was the first time Huawei has hired lobbyists to be members of the company's in-house staff, including three former congressional aides. Last month, Huawei hired Donald Purdy, formerly of Computer Sciences Corp, as chief security officer for its US operations.
ZTE also hopes to alleviate apprehensions about the company; in October of 2011 it registered its first in-house lobbyist, a former aide to Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Cal). Former Congressman Jon Christensen (D-Cal) also became one of ZTE's first in-house lobbyists in 2011.
