NEC Releases Smartphone, Tablets in China
Netease Tech, 3/16/12
Japanese consumer electronics maker NEC today announced the NEC 909e - the company's first smartphone since its return to the China market - along with two business tablets, the single-screen LT-B and the dual-screen LT-W. The water-resistant, dust-resistant, shock-resistant 909e handset features a Corning Gorilla Glass display for strong protection against scratches. The phone runs Android 2.3 and features a 1 GHz Qualcomm MSM8655 processor, 1 GB of ROM, and 512 MB of RAM, as well as an 8.08-megapixel camera, a 1430 mAH battery, and dual-mode, single-standby CDMA/GSM connectivity. Masaki Kidowaki, NEC's president for the Greater China region, said that the NEC 909e was aimed at consumers requiring rugged weatherproofing and high performance from their mobile phones.
Both of the tablet PCs announced at the event run Android and feature rugged water- and dust-resistant design, as well as user-replaceable batteries. The dual-screen tablet is targeted at public service applications in elementary and middle schools, retirement homes, and medical treatment centers, and offers connectivity to NEC's cloud services and solutions.
NEC shut down its mobile phone business in China in 2006, saying it had misjudged the market and failed to localize its products and management accordingly.
