Netease to Launch Facial Recognition System for E-Mail
Sina Tech, 12/23/11
Netease (Nasdaq: NTES) today announced that it will enable a facial recognition system for its free e-mail services (163.com, 126.com, and yeah.net) in the first half of 2012.
An employee at Netease familiar with the system revealed that the facial recognition system will require end users to have a webcam installed on their computer or device. After the webcam takes a picture of a user's face, the system will then be able to use the stored facial information to recognize each user's unique face. Users will have the option to use this facial recognition system for various new security features. One feature enables users to use the facial recognition system to verify their identity when remotely logging in from a different computer than normal, while another possible feature would require users to pass a facial recognition test in order to regain access to their account after exceeding the maximum number of incorrect password attempts.
Netease claims the facial recognition system has "a nearly 100% accurate recognition rate." The system will gradually be applied to all Netease products and services using Netease Pass for login.
