MIIT Chief Engineer Under Investigation
Sina Tech, 3/24/11
The News Office of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) said today that sources on the Chinese Communist Party's Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) had confirmed that MIIT chief engineer Su Jinsheng is suspected of severe violations of discipline and is currently under investigation.
The nature of the accusations against Su is not yet known, but there is no shortage of industry rumors. A source inside a telecom operator said that the case against Su could be related to further investigation and auditing of the corruption case involving former Sichuan Mobile GM Li Hua and others. The CCDI has basically completed the investigation stage of its case against Li Hua, and the investigators dedicated to the case left Sichuan before the Chinese New Year holiday in early February, but the case has still not been submitted to the courts. Further investigations into the cases and audits of the operators involved are still ongoing.
In June 1999, Su Jinsheng served as one of the first directors of China Mobile's (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) preparations workgroups, where he was a provisional party secretary. In April 2000, he became director of the MII's Telecommunications Administration Bureau, and in July 2008, he was appointed director of the MIIT's Telecommunications Administration Bureau. In April 2009, at age 54, Su was appointed MIIT chief engineer.
