Sina Microblog Launches GyPSii-Powered LBS Platform

BiaNews, 3/05/11

Chinese internet company Sina (Nasdaq: SINA) recently launched its Wei Lingdi ("Micro Kingdom") location-based service in collaboration with GyPSii (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., the Chinese subsidiary of Finnish location-based technology developer GeoSentric Oyj. The service's official website (vld.sina.cn) at present offers support only for the iPhone and Android platforms, with plans to roll out support for the Symbian operating system currently underway.

Integration with Wei Lingdi allows users of Sina's Weibo microblog service to locate things such as surrounding shopping malls, special discounts and ATM machines, and friends and celebrity footprints. Revenue from Wei Lingdi operations will reportedly be split between Sina and GyPSii.

Editor's Note: GyPSii (Shanghai) operates two websites in China: mobile photo sharing social networking site GyPSii (Tuding001.com), and Wei Lingdi, formerly operated solely by GyPSii (Shanghai) at eLingdi.com. User can log in Wei Lingdi by using Sina's Weibo account.
