Sina Tech, 12/28/10
China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) and Beijing Municipal Administration & Communications Card Co., Ltd. will release a contactless payment "mobile smart card" on December 31. No dates have been announced yet for commercial trials in other cities. The service uses 13.56MHz near field communications mobile payment standards and SIMpass technology from Beijing-based smart card solutions provider Watchdata Systems. The service will initially provide approximately 2,000 smart cards to Beijing Unicom users. Users will have separate billing for mobile payment and mobile communications services. New users must pay a fixed deposit and exchange their SIM card for a dual-mode NFC SIM card, and in return will receive free calling minutes.
China Unicom has previously conducted mobile payment trials in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Chongqing.
