China to Issue Online, Mobile Mapping Licenses
China Securities, 5/28/10
A spokesperson for China's State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping (SBSM) has revealed that SBSM will issue its first online mapping service provider licenses in June, and Sohu's (Nasdaq: SOHU) Sogou Maps is expected to be among the first recipients. The spokesperson also said that service providers who continue to provide online mapping services without a license by the end of 2010 will face legal prosecution.
On May 17, SBSM issued its Revised Standards Pertaining to the Online Mapping Services Industry. The regulations establish standards for qualifications, types of service, quality management, security and classified material, copyright protection and other areas. The standards establish a two-tier qualification system (levels A and B), and will also bring wireless online network mapping services under the scope of online mapping regulations.
A spokesperson for Baidu's (Nasdaq: BIDU) Baidu Maps said that the company plans to release a new mobile mapping client application after obtaining a license.
