China Launches Parental Supervision Program for Young Gamers

Sohu IT, 2/05/10

China's Ministry of Culture has launched a trial program to promote parental supervision of underage gamers. Six Chinese online gaming companies - Changyou (Nasdaq: CYOU), Tencent (0700.HK), Perfect World (Nasdaq: PWRD), Shanda Games (Nasdaq: GAME), Netease (Nasdaq: NTES), and Giant Interactive (NYSE: GA) - are taking part.

The six companies have set up service notices online with information hotlines and application procedures to offer more convenient means for parents and guardians to supervise underage gamers. Parents can submit the gaming account numbers of children who have become addicted to online gaming; after verification, the companies will limit or cut off service to the underage gamers in accordance with parents' requests, and will monitor and report on account activity to limit unhealthy game behavior by the underage gamers.
