China Unicom UPhone Plan Wins Government Support
Netease Tech, 11/27/09
A source from the China Unicom Research Institute has revealed that China Unicom's (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) UPhone plan has won support of the government, and is now listed as a "major national project." According to the source, the UPhone project is to be led by Unicom CEO Chang Xiaobing, to be carried out jointly by the operator along with industry backing.
A Unicom representative revealed at an industry meeting on November 6 that Unicom is currently planning a "UniStore," based on the UPhone, which will not conflict with Apple's App Store. However, details regarding investment, a timetable, and participating vendors are not yet known.
Editor's Note: Unicom's UPhone will use Unicom's mobile operating system UniPlus. For more background on the UPhone and UniStore, please see "MIIT Confirms China Unicom UPhone Plan" MD 6/08/09 issue and "China Unicom: UniStore Platform under Development" MD 11/06/09 issue.
