China Mobile Given Priority on Spectrum Allocation

Netease Tech, 10/09/08

Deputy director Xie Feibo of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology's (MIIT) Radio Administration Bureau said yesterday that China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) had applied for the 2300-2400 MHz frequency, and that the application was currently under review by the MIIT, which "would likely give priority consideration to TD-SCDMA."

TD-SCDMA currently uses the 2010-2025 MHz and 1880-1920 MHz spectrum, but the 1900-1920 band is also in use by the "Little Smart" PHS service. Xie says the MIIT is moderating between China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) and China Netcom (NYSE: CN; 0906.HK) to migrate PHS users, which will gradually free up resources in the 1900-1920 MHz band.
