China's July 2023 Domestic Handset Shipments Down 7% YoY, 16% MoM

A total of 18.55 mln mobile handsets were shipped in China in July 2023, down 6.8% YoY and 16.2% MoM, according to new figures released by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), a department of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).
Of total shipments in July, 15.06 mln, or 81.2%, were 5G handsets, 3.38 mln, or 18.2%, were 4G handsets, and the remaining 0.11 mln, or 0.6%, were 3G and 2G handsets. Note that CAICT breaks out shipment figures only for 5G and 4G models, to the nearest 1,000 units and 10,000 units, respectively; accordingly, the 3G/2G figures we have provided here are calculated using CAICT's total, 5G, and 4G figures, and may include a rounding error of up to 10,000 units.
In the 7-month period from Jan-Jul 2023, a total of 148.21 mln mobile handsets were shipped in China, down 5.1% YoY. Of this total, 117.35 mln, or 79.2%, were 5G handsets, 30.16 mln, or 20.4%, were 4G handsets, and the remaining 0.70 mln, or 0.5%, were 3G and 2G handsets.
A total of 16.24 mln handsets from domestic handset brands were shipped in China in July, down 11.2% YoY and 17.0% MoM, accounting for 87.5% of total handset shipments. Shipments of smartphones comprised 17.29 mln units, down 9.6% YoY and 17.1% MoM, and accounting for 93.2% of total handsets shipped in China in July.
In the 7-month period from Jan-Jul 2023, 121.34 mln handsets from domestic handset brands were shipped in China, down 9.1% YoY, accounting for 81.9% of total handset shipments. During the same 7-month period, shipments of smartphones comprised 141.70 mln, or 95.6%, of total handsets shipped in China.
During the month of July, 35 new handset models were released in China, up 59.1% YoY and 59.1% MoM. Of the total new handset models released during the month, 18, or 51.4%, were 5G models, 17, or 48.6%, were 4G models, and none were 3G or 2G models; 30, or 85.7%, of the new handset models were from domestic brands, and 28, or 80.0%, were smartphone models.
In the 7-month period from Jan-Jul 2023, 238 new handset models were released in China, up 6.7% YoY; of this total, 103, or 43.3%, were 5G models, 131, or 55.0%, were 4G models, and 4, or 1.7%, were 3G or 2G models. Of the total new handset models released from Jan-Jul 2023, 219, or 92.0%, were from domestic brands, and 201, or 84.5%, were smartphone models.
Editor's Note: CAICT's statistics cover domestically produced, domestically shipped handsets from both Chinese and foreign brands, but do not include imported handsets or exports of domestically produced units. Only handsets shipped through official channels are included, meaning grey market or knock-off handsets are not covered in CAICT's figures. "Shipped" means only that the manufacturer shipped the handset to a wholesaler or retailer, where it may or may not have been sold to a consumer during the month under discussion.
